Plymouth is an automobile margue that was marketed by the Chrysler Corporation and DailmlerChrysler. Chrysler introduced the Plymouth on July 7, 1928, which was their first automobile in low price market. During this time, Chevrolet and Ford had the market on the lower priced automobiles. The Plymouths created were a bit higher than those of Ford and Chevrolet but they offered unique features that the other automobile manufacturer could not match such as hydraulic brakes. The logo of the Plymouth automobiles was a rear view of the Mayflower ship, which brought the pilgrims to Plymouth Rock, thus the reason for the name.
The true beginning of the Plymouth was with Walter Chrysler. Walter took over as the controller of the Maxwell-Chalmers car company in the 1920’s. With this, he of course received the Maxwell automobile as part of the package deal. He used the facilities of Maxwell-Chalmers to create the first Chrysler in 1924. He then decided to create a lower priced car to compete with Ford and Chevrolet. He reworked the Maxwell and created a lower priced Chrysler model. He once again reworked the automobile and created the Plymouth.
During the 1930’s, the Great Depression hit the United States, many automobile manufacturers could not compete with the low priced cars, however, the Chrysler Corporation survived. At the beginning of the 1930’s Chrysler had three divisions, which included Chrysler, DeSoto, and Dodge. By 1931, Plymouth rose to the number three spot for best selling cars.
From 1957 until 1959, Plymouth was one of the best selling automobiles in the United States; however, the 1960’s was not so nice to Plymouth. The public was not too interested in the Plymouth style created from 1959 until 1962 and the competition was winning.
During the 1990s’ there were only four vehicles sold under the name of Plymouth which were the Voyager/Grand Voyager minivan, the Breeze mid-size sedan, the Neon compact car, and the Prowler sports car.
2001 saw the end of the Plymouth. The neon is the only automobile left in the Plymouth line. The Prowler is now a Chrysler, the Breeze was dropped, and the PT Cruiser even though there were plans to market it under Plymouth was launched as a Chrysler. The last Plymouth off the assembly line was June 28, 2001.
