Mazda is a Japanese automobile manufacturer. Mazda had its start with the name Toyo Cork Kogyo Co., Ltd, which was established in 1920. In 1927, the name was changed to Toyo Kogyo Co., Ltd. In the beginning, Mazda did not create any type of automobiles, they manufactured machine tools. Their first manufactured car was the Mazda-Go in 1931. During World War II, Mazda worked for the war effort and has been attributed for the creation of the series 30 through 35 type 99 rifle.
In 1984, the company began using the name Mazda even though prior to this date, each automobile carried the name Mazda. The first four-wheel car unveiled by Mazda was the Mazda R360 in 1960 and the Mazda Carol in 1962. Mazda went from a 16 horsepower kei car to a Wankel engined sports car known as the Mazda Cosmo. In 1968, they began selling cars in Canada and in 1970 the United States saw Mazda’s on the showroom floors.
Mazda began having financial setbacks in the late 1990’s. The main reason Mazda saw a decline in sales was the high price of the RX-7. The Miata was the only other car being sold at the time and it could not sustain the company.
The Ford Motor Company had a piece of the pie so to speak of Mazda in the amount of 15 percent. On March 31, 1999, the Ford Motor Company had increased the amount to 33.4 percent, which was a controlling interest.
In 2007, the MazdaSpeed 3 made it on the Automobile Magazine’s All Stars 2007 list.
