Nissan is a Japanese automobile manufacturer; however, this was not the name the company had originally. In the beginning back in 1914, the Kwaishinsha Motorcar Works built the first car by the of DAT. This stood for the first letter of each of the partner’s surname, which were Kenjiro Den, Rokuro Aoyama, and Meitaro Takeuchi. In 1918, the Kwaishinsha Motorcar Works changed their name to Kwaishinsha Motorcar Company and in 1925 changed it once again to DAT Motorcar Company.

During this time in history, passenger cars were not a high priority and in 1918, most of the vehicles manufactured by DAT were military trucks. By the 1920’s military trucks were not in demand which was a problem for DAT, thus they merged with Jitsuyo Motors, Japan’s 2nd most prominent truck maker at the time.

DAT Motors in 1926 merged with Osaka based Jitsuyo Jidosha Co., Ltd. and became DAT Automobile Manufacturing Co., Ltd until 1932.

The first vehicle off the assembly line called Datson was a smaller car, which was produced in 1931. Aikawa purchased controlling shares in DAT Motors in 1931, and then in 1933 it merged Tobata Casting's automobile parts department with DAT Motors.

In 1934, Aikawa separated various divisions of their company, thus the automobile parts division of the Tobata Casting was a new subsidiary, Nissan Motor. Shareholders of the company were not very happy with the prospect of automobiles in Japan, thus Aikawa purchased the shares of the Tobata Casting from all shareholders in June 1934. At this time, the new owners were Nippon Sangyo and Hitachi. During this time period, Nissan manufactured trucks, airplanes, and engines for the military.

During the war, much of the land in Japan was captured, and Nissan moved their main plant to China. The plant created machinery for the Japanese war effort until it was captured by American and Russian military forces.

Nissan had its ups and downs and various owners throughout the next few years. Nissan began having financial problems in the late 1990’s and came to an agreement with Renault S.A. of France. The Renault – Nissan Alliance was signed on March 27, 1999.

Mazda is a Japanese automobile manufacturer. Mazda had its start with the name Toyo Cork Kogyo Co., Ltd, which was established in 1920. In 1927, the name was changed to Toyo Kogyo Co., Ltd. In the beginning, Mazda did not create any type of automobiles, they manufactured machine tools. Their first manufactured car was the Mazda-Go in 1931. During World War II, Mazda worked for the war effort and has been attributed for the creation of the series 30 through 35 type 99 rifle.

In 1984, the company began using the name Mazda even though prior to this date, each automobile carried the name Mazda. The first four-wheel car unveiled by Mazda was the Mazda R360 in 1960 and the Mazda Carol in 1962. Mazda went from a 16 horsepower kei car to a Wankel engined sports car known as the Mazda Cosmo. In 1968, they began selling cars in Canada and in 1970 the United States saw Mazda’s on the showroom floors.

Mazda began having financial setbacks in the late 1990’s. The main reason Mazda saw a decline in sales was the high price of the RX-7. The Miata was the only other car being sold at the time and it could not sustain the company.

The Ford Motor Company had a piece of the pie so to speak of Mazda in the amount of 15 percent. On March 31, 1999, the Ford Motor Company had increased the amount to 33.4 percent, which was a controlling interest.

In 2007, the MazdaSpeed 3 made it on the Automobile Magazine’s All Stars 2007 list.
