Porsche as we know it by is also known as Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche Ag, and Porsche AG that is a German Sports Car manufacturer.
In the beginning, Professor Ferdinand Porsche began the company in which he offered development work or consulting for motor vehicles. At this time, there were no cars actually created with the Porsche name. One of the very first contracts the company received was one to create a car for the people from the German government. In German, this translated into “Volkswagen.”
The first Porsche was not created until 1938, which was the Porsche 64 made mainly from components of the Volkswagen Beetle.
Ferry Porsche the son of Ferdinand could not find a car that he really wished to purchase, so he decided to create his own. The Porsche known as the 356 was created in a small workshop in Gmund, Austria. This Porsche had an aluminum body. This prototype was shown to German auto dears and the pre-orders started flowing in, thus production was started. Many people call the 356 the first Porsche as it was the first ever sold by the fledging company.
After the war, many parts needed to create the 356 was in short supply and some parts from the Volkswagen Beetle had to used including the engine, gearbox, and suspension.
Motor racing was a great success story for the Porsche, especially the Porsche 550 Spyder. They produced several other Porsche’s designed for racing including the Porsche 911.
The company changed from being a limited partnership to public limited company in 1972. this move allowed executive board members to come from outside of the family. At this time, no family members were on the board and had no operational control of the company. the first CEO of Porsche AG was Dr. Ernst Fuhrmann.
1990 brought an agreement with Toyota in which Porsche will learn and benefit from the production methods used by the Japanese. At this time, Toyota is working with Porsche with hybrid technology. It is rumored they are working on a Hybrid Cayenne SUV along with a 4 door coupe named the Panamera.

The history of Mercedes-Benz can be quite confusing when you go back to the original patents. On January 29, 1886, Karl Benz received a patent for his “Benz Patent Motorwagen” and his first engine in 1879. In 1885, Gottlieb Daimler along with his design partner Wilhelm Maybach received a patent on August 29, 1885 for a prototype of a modern engine, which they called “grandfather clock engine.”
While Daimler and Mayback worked together to create various carriages, Benz worked on refining his motorwagen. Daimler and Mayback created their first four-stroke engine powered car with four wheels in 1889. Together they founded Daimler Motoren Gesellschaft in 1890 and their first automobile was seen in 1892. Benz on the other hand sold his first car in 1888. His first four-wheeled car was sold in 1891. Karl Benz’s company, Benz and Cie became the world firsts and largest car manufacturer by 1900.
As with many automobile manufacturers throughout Europe, those in Germany had the same problems during World War I. Both of the companies felt the crunch of the economy and even though they were rival companies began a merger in 1924, by 1926 they were merged totally and became Daimler-Benz AG. Daimler-Benz AG manufactured Mercedes-Benz automobiles and trucks. The agreement of the merger is that both companies had to stay together until 2000. The main focus of the company was land vehicles however; they also manufactured engines for airplanes and power boats, and Zeppelins.
Daimler-Benz of Stuttgart, Germany eventually merged with the Chrysler Corporation, an American automobile manufacturer in 1998. At this time, DaimlerChrysler was created. The merger did not produce what the deal makers had expected in the way of a trans-Atlantic automotive giant. DiamlerChrysler reported on May 14, 2007, they would sell Chrysler to Cerberus Capital Management of New York, which is a private equity firm that is known for restructuring companies in financial trouble. The new name of the company, as long as shareholders agree, will be Daimler AG. The sell was completed on August 3, 2007 and the United States Company took on the name Chrysler Holding LLC.

The beginning of the Maserati car manufacturer is with seven brothers including Carlo, Bindo, Alfieri, Mario, Ettore, and Ernesto. One other brother named Alfieri died shortly after birth and the name was given to the next son born. Each one of these brothers aided in the success of their name in the automobile industry.
Carlo was the first of the brothers to create a car, which was a single cylinder engine with a simple chassis. Alfieri established Officine Alfieri Maserati in 1914, thus the true beginning of Maserati automobile manufacturers.
Alfieri, Bindo, and Ernesto built the 2-litre Grand Prix cars for Diatto; however, in 1926 Diatto stopped the production of race cars. This led the Maserati brothers into creating the first Maserati and the founding of their company on April 25, 1926. Also during this year, Alfieri won the Targa Florio driving one of the first Maseratis. The trident symbol credit is given to Mario, who is believed to be based on of Bologna’s civic symbols, the statue of Neptune.
Alfieri Maserati passed away in 1932; however, three of the brothers keep the company alive, which included Bindo, Ettore, and Ernesto, by building and racing cars.
In 1937, the Maserati brothers sold their shares of the company to the Orsi family. The brothers took on engineering roles. The Orsi family moved the headquarters of the company to Modena in 1940. During this same year, Maserati won the Indianapolis 500 and again in 1941.
War hit this automobile manufacture much like it did others and production was ceased to produce items for the war effort. However, Maserati was in competition to build a V16 towncar for Beninto Mussolini before Ferry Porsche from Volkswagen could build one for Adolf Hitler.
Finally, after 1957, Maserati turned more toward road cars. At this time the chief engineer, Giulio Alfieri built the Maserati 3500 2+2 coupe with a 6-cylinder engine.
Fiat took over ownership of Maserati in 1993. Not much was seen in the way of new Maseratis until 1999 when the new 3200 GT was launched which was the only Fiat Maserati ever created.
In 1997, Ferrari purchased 50% of the Maserati shares and by 1999 had full control. Ferrari added the Maserati to its luxury division.
