The De Lorean Motor Company was an automobile manufacture created by John De Lorean on October 24, 1975. The car manufacturer is only remembered for their one model, which was the stainless steel De Lorean DMC-12 sports car, which had gull-wing doors.
John DeLorean was already a name that many recognized prior to the creation of the DeLorean Motor Company. He was known for being an innovative business maverick, a jetsetter, and the youngest person to be in an executive position with General Motors.
In order to finance his dream of the DeLorean Motor Company, DeLorean received business loans form the Bank of America and other partnerships and private investments with various personalities including Johnny Carson from “The Tonight Show.” Another way in which DeLorean funded his company was through giving shares of his company to dealerships that would offer his cars for sale on their lots.
Construction of his assembly plant in Northern Ireland began in October 1978. There were many delays in construction and budget overruns, which stopped the opening of the plant on the original date in 1979 to 1981 before any production, could begin. The workers at the plant were inexperienced which brought about quality issues.
When bankruptcy was closing in on De Lorean, he was filmed accepting money to take part in drug trafficking. The De Lorean Motor Company went into bankruptcy in 1982. DeLorean even after being acquitted on the drug charges he still had several legal battles mainly from the bankruptcy of his company well into the 1990’s. He finally had to file personal bankruptcy in September 1999 and in March of 2000 was evicted from his 434-acre estate in New Jersey. DeLorean passed away on March 19, 2005 at the age of 80.
There were around 9,000 De Lorean’s built during its manufacturing years. Today it is believed that around 6,000 still survive. If you really wish to own a DeLorean you can purchase one using a combination of new and reproduction parts for around $42,500, however, you may find an original one out there for around $20,000.
The DeLorean Motor Company of Texas purchased the company’s name and logo because the trademark registration lapsed.
