Volkswagen is a German automobile manufacturer located in Wolfsburg, Germany. During Hitler’s reign, he ordered Ferdinand Porsche to make changes to the car he designed in 1931 to make it better for the working man. Hans Ledwinka talked with Ferdinand Porsche to discuss his ideas for this automobile. Much of the design featured ideas from the Tatra, which was seen in the 1938 Kdf-Wagen, which was later named VW Kafer or what we know as the Beetle.
Changes that were noted included better fuel efficiency, more reliability, and easier to use. The car had a unique round shape and had an air-cooled, flat-four, rear mounted engine. The chief designer of the car was Erwin Komenda, which is still the design of the Beetle we see today. This design was one of the first to use a wind tunnel. The Type 1 Cabriolet was given to Hitler on his birthday in 1938 even though none was ever seen by the public.
War hit Germany, production of cars was ceased, and the focus was on machines used for the war effort. Vehicles made during this time were the Type 81 Kubelwagen utility vehicle and the Schwimmwagen an all-wheel-drive off-roader.
The factory was heavily bombed by Americans during the war and everything was handed over to the British. The factory was then put under the control of Ivan Hirst. Hirst painted one of the vehicles green and showed it to British Army headquarters, which ordered 20,000. The first cars manufactured were given to occupying forces and the German Post Office.
After the occupation, many UK service personnel took their Beetles home with them. Of course, production of the Volkswagen began to grow after the war.
In 1948, Heinrich Nordhoff was given the position to run the factory. In 1949, Hirst left the company.
In 1949, Volkswagen was unveiled and sold in the United States. Only two were sold in that year. To try to boost sales to the American public it was called for a short time Victory Wagon. In 1955, Volkswagen of America was established for sales, service, and the production of the Type 1 Volkswagen Beetle.

Audi’s roots can be traced back to 1899 with August Horch. He created his first car in 1901 in Zwickau, however, he was forced from his own company in 1909. The started a new car manufacturing company in Zwickau still using his own name Horch. The bad news for Horch is that he was taken to court and sued by his former partners for trademark infringement by using his own name to manufacture automobiles. After court, he was not allowed to use his name for his new car company.
Horch held a meeting with Franz Fikentshcer in order to come up with a new name for his company. Franz’s son was present, studying Latin in a corner of the room. He suggested using the name Audi with an explanation that Horch in German translates to Hark which translates to Audi in Latin. This was accepted excitedly from everyone present at the meeting, thus the beginning of the Audi tradition.
The first Audi car manufactured was the 2612 cc four cylinder model. Other models included 3564 cc model, 4680 cc and 5720 cc models. These cars were mainly used in sporting events. In 1920, August Horch left his company. In 1924, the first six cylinder model, 4655 cc was seen coming off the assembly line. Jorgen Rasmussen who also owne DKW purchased Audi in 1924.
In 1932 the Auto Union was formed with Audi, Horch, DKW, and the Wanderer. During World War I and II, the Auto Union created such vehicles as engines, the Sd-Kfz 222 armored car and the Kraftfahrzeug.
Like many German auto manufacturers during World War II, the Auto Union was hit quite hard by bombs and were pretty much destroyed. The Auto Union was broken up and remaned VEB Automobilwerk Zwickau which moved to Ingolstadt and began producing cars under the DKW brand.
In 1958 Daimler-Benz purchased 87% of the Auto Union and in 1959 acquired 100%. In 1964, Volkswagen purchased the factory in Ingolstadt and all the Auto Union brands.
Today, the Audi is known as Audi NSU Auto Union AG. Volkswagen introduced the Audi on its own in 1970 to the United States. The first Audi under this production was the Audi 100 of 1968, in 1972 the Audi 80/Fox, and in 1974 the Audi 50.
