When you hear the term Shelby cars, you must realize that Shelby was not an automobile manufacturer. In fact, Carroll Shelby was nothing more than a chicken farmer until all of his chickens died and a friend of his suggested he become an amateur racecar driver. This is when his fame and fortune began and after his retirement the beginning of the various Shelby automobiles.
When Shelby retired in October of 1959, he opened a high performance driving school named Shelby-American. While he was teaching, he was also designing the first Cobra. He used parts such as the chassis from an AC car and Ford engines. Shelby designed such cars as the GT40, The Shelby GT350, the Shelby GT500, and the 427 Shelby Cobra. He then left Ford Motor Company and headed off to work with the other two big automobile manufacturers.
Lee Iacocca of the Chrysler Corporation asked Shelby to join Dodge. Under the Dodge marquee, the cars designed by Shelby included the Dodge Shelby Charger in 1983 and 1984, the Dodge Charger Shelby in 1985 until 1987, and the Dodge Omni GLH in 1984 until 1986.
Some automobiles did not always bear the Shelby name but did use modified parts created by Shelby. These include the Dodge Daytona Turbo Z C/S, Dodge Daytona Shelby Z, Dodge Shelby Dakota, Dodge Daytona C/S, Dodge Daytona Shelby, Dodge Lancer Shelby, Dodge Shadow Competition, Dodge Spirit R/T, and the Dodge Daytona IROC R/T.
Automobiles that were modified and sold as Shelby’s were the Shelby GLHS based on the Dodge Omni GLH, Shelby GLHS based on the Dodge Charger Shelby, Shelby Lancer based on the Dodge Lancer, Shelby CSX based on the Dodge Shadow, Shelby CSX-T based on the Dodge Shadow, Shelby Dakota based on the Dodge Dakota and the Shelby CSX-VNT based on the Dodge Shadow.
Shelby after his stint with Dodge Shelby back to the Ford Motor Company and signed a new contract. In 2004, the Ford Shelby Cobra Concept was in the several United States car shows. This Shelby automobile had a body that resembled the 1960’s Cobra with a few modern touches.
In 2006, in an agreement with the Hertz Corporation, the limited edition Shelby GT-H was created. |
