When you hear the words Land Rover, you may associate the brand with the Ford Motor Company, however, even though Land Rover may be a subsidiary of the Ford Premier Automotive Group it is actually a British all terrain vehicle and multipurpose vehicle manufacturer.

The Land Rover received its start on the island of Anglesey in Wales in the United Kingdom in 1947. Maurice Wilks was the chief designer employed at the British car company by the name of Rover. He created the Land Rover on his farm in Newboruough, Anglesey. He built the first Land Rover on a Jeep chassis. Rumor has it that Wilks liked the American World War II jeep so much he used one at his holiday home in Wales.

In the beginning, the Land Rover was created with lightweight rustproof proprietary allow of aluminum and magnesium which was called Brimabright. The reason this material was used is that steel was short after the war but there was an excess of aircraft aluminum.

In 1987, the Land Rover is unveiled to the United States market. In 1994, the Rover group is taken over by BMW. The Ford Motor Company comes into play in 2000 when BMW breaks up the Rover Group and sell Land Rover to Ford. The Ford Motor Company pays £1.8 billion to attain Land Rover.

The third generation of Land Rovers is introduced in 2002 known as the Range Rover. In 2005, the Jaguar AJ-V8 engine is used to replace the BMW M62 V8 engine in the Range Rover. 2006 say a totally new Land Rover with a 2.4 litre diesel engine, 6 speed gearbox, and the intro of the second generation of Freelander.
