Ford Motor Company is an American corporation along with being the world’s third largest automobile manufacturer.
In 1903, twelve investors joined with Henry Ford and $28,000 in cash to found the Ford Motor Company. At this time, Henry Ford was 40 years old. Still to this date, the Ford Motor Company has survived over 100 years of being under family control.
The first automobile created in 1903 was the infamous Model A. In the early days of the company, they were located in a building they had rented on Mack Avenue in Detroit, Michigan. The production was only a few cars a day being manufactured with three or four men creating each car by components that were made to order from various companies. The Model T was the first car created by the company owned factory in 1909. During 1909, there were 18,000 Model T manufactured.
Ford Motor Company was growing rapidly and by 1911 moved to a larger plant in Highland Park. Here there were 70,000 Model T’s created in that first year.
1913 brought the innovative invention of the moving assembly line. With this invention, a chassis could be built in 2 hours and 40 minutes opposed to 12 ½ hours prior to the assembly line and the ability to mass produce. Annual output of cars created increased to 250,000 and by 1920 this figures was over one million.
The problem with mass production was it was very hard on the workers. Many workers would not stay with their employment, thus many delays were happening along with lost money used to train new employees.
However, Ford changed all of that. He raised the pay of employees to $5 per day, which was double the pay at that time for a day’s work. He also implemented the 8 hour day and a 5 day work week. This was the beginning of minimum wage and the 40 hour work week prior to the United States Government enacting this resolution.
By 1919, the Ford Motor Company was creating half the cars in the United States. The Ford oval trademark we all recognize was introduced in 1907. The oval you see today, however, was introduced on June 17, 2003 as the Ford Motor Company celebrated their 100th anniversary. |
